A concept sketch for a Valkyrie painting, sketches like these are considered gems when rescued from an artist's studio. When Greg drew this sketch in the 1980's, he would have tossed it aside amidst several other sketches, caring not for the process, but only the final painting that would be created. It was his agent and the numerous visitors he's had in his studio over the years who have made him able to understand the value in the pieces that are such an integral part of his creative process.
Notice the odd shape of the paper, and the slight wear throughout the page. See the energetic pencil strokes as he quickly figured out lighting, the emphasis on some lines while leaving others unfinished–this is the mind of the artist frantically working out numerous aspects of design in what some might just call a simple sketch.
Pencil on paper.
